The Wildlife Wonders of Olare Motorogi

While many safari-goers flock to the Masai Mara during the bustling months of July through October, Olare Motorogi offers exceptional game viewing year-round. Its hills are home to a diverse array of giraffes, wildebeests, warthogs, and zebras. The abundance of herbivores naturally attracts predators, making it a favorite spot for lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, leopards, and other carnivores.
The ‘luggas’ or small seasonal streams winding through the hills are lined with lush green forests, attracting leaf-eaters such as elephants, baboons, buffaloes, and hippos. The Mara Plains, part of the larger Maasai Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, offer unique wildlife experiences and highlight the benefits of community conservancies for both Maasai landowners and safari operators. During the great wildebeest migration, the conservancy becomes a hub of activity as migrating herds traverse the wildlife corridors. However, for the more dramatic river crossings, a drive south toward the Mara Confluence might be necessary.
Exciting Activities in Olare Motorogi

Why choose a stay at a Masai Mara conservancy? The high concentration of wildlife makes it a captivating addition to any itinerary. Staying at a conservancy offers unique advantages like off-road safaris, guided nature walks, bush meals, and night game drives. Safari vehicles are used to provide close encounters with wildlife during safaris, enhancing the overall adventure.
These activities unfold against the backdrop of emerald riverine forests that snake through the lower valleys of the Olare Orok and Ntiakitiak Rivers, the striking Ntiakitiak Gorge, and a stunning twelve-kilometer escarpment. The acacia woodlands beneath the escarpment are teeming with diverse wildlife. Many of these activities aren’t feasible within the confines of the Masai Mara National Reserve. If you value cultural interaction and wish to connect with the Maasai people, the conservancy provides ample opportunities. As stakeholders in the conservancy, the Maasai warmly welcome guests.
Unveiling the Olare Motorogi Conservancy

A beacon of success in Masai Mara’s conservation journey, the Olare Motorogi Conservancy spans 142 square kilometers. This conservancy is dedicated to preserving local wildlife while simultaneously allowing the Maasai people to thrive through safari tourism. With only five safari camps and a maximum of 94 beds, this exclusive conservancy ensures that there’s only one safari vehicle per 8.5 square kilometers. Examples of these camps include Kicheche Bush Camp, Mara Plains Camp, and Porini Lion Camp.
Before 2006, the area comprised two separate conservancies: Motorogi and Olare Orok. The landscape was a stunning blend of endless grasslands, riverine forests, and Acacia woodlands dotted with rural Maasai homesteads. However, the overgrazing by the Maasai’s large herds of sheep, goats, and cattle created an unsustainable environment for both the Maasai and the local wildlife.
To address these challenges, the two conservancies merged under the name Mara Olare Motorogi Conservancy. The merger not only enhanced conservation efforts but also allowed the five local safari operators to traverse the combined territories freely. This is fantastic news for safari enthusiasts visiting the conservancy.
Without fences or divided properties, wildlife can roam freely, offering more opportunities for wildlife viewing. The collaboration between 288 Maasai landowners and safari camp operators also benefits the Maasai communities through employment, educational investments, and other community initiatives. These camps operate on eco-friendly principles and have limited guest capacity to ensure minimal impact on the environment, thereby enhancing the safari experience.
Luxurious Accommodation in Olare Motorogi

Despite its rustic charm, the conservancy hosts a selection of luxurious safari camps that pamper guests with exceptional comfort and care. Each camp offers a comprehensive range of wildlife viewing options and a variety of additional safari and cultural activities.
Whether you prefer observing the big five from the safety of a 4×4 safari vehicle or immersing yourself in nature on a guided walk, the safari camps in Olare Motorogi cater to every safari desire. These camps provide intimate luxury and all the creature comforts you could wish for. Olare Mara Kempinski, for example, offers luxurious accommodations that allow guests to enjoy abundant wildlife sightings without the crowds typically found in more commercialized areas.
So, if the thought of lumpy beds or cold showers deters you, rest assured… there’s no need to rough it in the wild Kenyan outback. With fewer than 24 beds per camp, you’re guaranteed an exclusive safari experience. Staying in a private conservancy enhances the overall safari experience by offering abundant wildlife sightings without overcrowding. All camps are committed to conservation, striving
