The Detailed, 4 Days Masai Mara Safari with a Stay at Ashnil Mara Camp Itinerary

Without further ado, here is our summarized, four days Masai Mara game reserve and Ashnil safari itinerary.

Day 1: Pickup from JKIA, Transfer to Mara, & Afternoon Game Drive

Your 4-day safari to the Masai Mara National Reserve and Ashnil Mara Camp starts with us welcoming you at JKIA early on arrival. Your safari guide will be at the airport waiting to welcome you to Kenya when you check out with our signature warm smile followed by pleasantries.

He will then brief you on the trip to Maasai Mara National Reserve, welcome you aboard our luxurious safari vehicle, and then drive toward the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The journey to Masai Mara from Nairobi takes about 6 hours in the safari vehicle.

Stopover at the Great Rift Valley & Narok Town

You’ll find yourselves at the mesmerizing Great Rift Valley Viewpoint one hour later. The guide will stop for about 15 minutes to let you take photos, enjoy the scenery, stretch your legs, and explore the attraction.

You will continue with the second part of your journey for about 3 hours and then stop at Narok town. Here, you have the last opportunity to buy some essentials you might need during your 3-night stay at Ashnil Mara Camp .

Your stop at Narok is the best time to visit the bathroom before continuing with the final part of your journey to the camp. You can also grab some coffee at any coffee shop in the Mall.

The safari guide will leave Narok and head straight to the lodge. You’ll arrive at around noon. Our guide will assist you with check-in and leave you to have lunch and enjoy the hotel.

First Game Drive at Maasai Mara National Reserve

Later at 3:00 pm, you’ll move out for your first game viewing in Masai Mara National Reserve until dusk. Late afternoon game drive is the perfect time to spot the hunters in action as they strive to get dinner for their families.

You might also come face-to-face with herds of elephants as they head to their sleeping quarters. There is a high possibility of spotting antelopes, warthogs, ostriches, hyenas, buffalos, and a variety of birds.

These game drives in the Maasai Mara are exceptional. On a lucky day, you might be lucky to see 3 or 4 members of the big 5. At dusk, you return to your hotel for dinner and rest.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive at Masai Mara with Packed Lunch

Waking up to an early morning of game viewing inside this reserve is a great experience that is available only in the Masai Mara. Today you’ll take your breakfast early and carry packed lunch for day two of your Ashnil Mara Camp 4 Days Safari.

Early morning is the best time to spot the predators making a kill or grazers heading to their grazing lands. It’s ideal for spotting gazelles, topis, giraffes, zebras, and other animals as they nibble the grass away.

The guide will drive past the herds of Impalas, Zebras, and other Masai Mara animals , this time looking for the big 5. Have your camera and binoculars ready, for the Masai Mara is home to a huge population of over 450 bird species.

Having a Picnic Lunch at the Masai Mara National Reserve

Picnic Lunch at Maasai Mara

As the sun gets hot, the animals will retreat. It’s about 1:00 pm; you are deep in the Masai Mara and most likely hungry. Your safari guide will find a nice place inside the park, ideally under a shade and close to the Mara River, and set up a picnic lunch.

The tour guide gives you enough time to enjoy your meal and take photos. Later you board the vehicle and continue with the afternoon game viewing until late evening, which is the end of game drives.

Expect to catch the monkeys doing monkey business, cubs playing with their parents, and marveling at the African sunset before returning to Ashnil Masai Mara Camp for dinner and night rest in your room or pool.

Day 3: Optional Hot Air Balloon Followed by Full-Day Game Drive with Packed Lunch

At an additional USD 475 Per Person, your third day can be a special one. You’ll start with an exciting hot air balloon safari. An adventure you’ll remember for a lifetime.

The 1-hr to 2-hr ride over Masai Mara plains allows you to explore the savannah from above. Here you’ll view the river, plains, and wildlife from a bird’s eye.

You’ll understand why the reserve is called Mara (dotted) from the sky. You start the next phase of the hot air balloon ride on landing, which is a splendid champagne bush breakfast.

Later you enjoy a mid-morning game viewing followed by a picnic lunch. Your afternoon game viewing will begin in the late afternoon and last for three to four hours.

It increases your chance of spotting the lions, cheetahs, or leopards making a kill and the game drive ends in the early evening. The game viewing also allows you to come across wildlife you might have missed the previous days before returning to your Masai Mara accommodation .

The Wildebeest Migration Safari

For a traveler who books a Maasai Mara safari between July and Oct, you’ll get to see the wildebeest migration at the Masai Mara. The massive herds consist of over 1.2 million wildebeests, hundreds of thousands of zebras, and a selection of gazelles.

The wildebeests migrate from the Serengeti National park to Masai Mara, crossing through the Mara River.

The Mara River crossing is one of the best parts of the migration safari as you get to see the crocodile hunt. Ashnil Mara camp is well positioned to give you a front-room ticket to the Mara River crossing from your room. Thus, Ashnil Mara Camp is the perfect place to spend 4 days, 3 nights, or 2 nights, 3 days safari in the Maasai Mara.
