The Detailed 3 Nights, 4 Days Masai Mara Flying Safari Itinerary
A flight from Nairobi to Masai Mara allows you to get to the Mara fast and start the game Viewing immediately. Below is the detailed 4 Days Masai Mara itinerary for the Nairobi-Masai-Mara fly-in safari package. Kindly note you can fly to Masai Mara from early as 8 am.
Day 1: Pickup from JKIA, Transfer to Wilson, Flight to Mara, Mid-Morning Game Viewing, and Afternoon Game Viewing
On arrival at JKIA, you will find your private tour guides waiting to welcome you with a broad smile. You will effortlessly identify us as we have placards with your name in bold letters, and of course, due to their signature warm smile.
The safari guide will welcome you and give you a short briefing on your safari. If you need any last-minute services like cash withdrawal, phone setup, or shopping, he will be at hand to guide you on how to get it done.
The next step will be to drive you in a safari vehicle to Wilson Airport for your flight from Nairobi to Masai Mara. Wilson Airport in Nairobi is located along Langata Road, a half-hour drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
On arrival, your driver-guide will arrange for your transfer and ensure that you have boarded. As mentioned, it takes 60 quick minutes to leave Nairobi and be in time for a game viewing in the middle of the African jungle, depending on the arrival time. The international morning flight from India to the JKIA will see you get transferred to Wilson, take the one-hour flight from Nairobi to Masai Mara, and be in time for the morning adventure in Masai Mara.
On arrival at the Mara, our Maasai guide will pick you up in a luxurious, 4*4 safari Landcruiser with an open roof for optimal game viewing. Depending on the local flight time, you will either head straight for game drives in Masai Mara or check in at the camp.
The transfer can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on where you’re staying. However, the most exciting thing about it is that your game drives begin as soon as you land inside the Mara!
We say this because you will start seeing animals right from the airstrip. The short trip to your hotel will act as a ‘mini-game viewing’, which you will enjoy.
On arrival at your camp, your driver-guide will help you check in and allow you to relax. He will pick you up again at around 3 pm for late afternoon game drives in Masai Mara. Late afternoon and early mornings are the best time to witness a hunt, even better when you come during the peak season from July to October.
Although you won’t venture too far into the reserve during this game viewing, you will encounter numerous herds going about their business of finding dinner.
If you’re lucky, you may see the jungle king in action. After two to three exciting hours, you will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Full-Day Game Viewing at Masai Mara National Reserve with Packed Lunch
On the second day of your 4 Days on Kenya Flying Safari to Masai Mara, you will explore the vast savannah earnestly. A full-day game viewing means you will be gone all day, only returning to the camp in the evening. It’s one of the best ways to experience the reserve during your safari from Nairobi to Masai Mara.
The other exciting part is that you will carry packed lunch, and nothing says Masai Mara more than lunch under a lone acacia tree.
You head out right after breakfast, moving slowly, allowing time to catch every moment of the beauty unfolding before you. And the driver is knowledgeable and experienced and will happily share tidbits and anecdotes about different animals you are coming across.
Whenever you come across a herd of elephants, or a pack of lions, he will stop to allow you to take as many photos as you wish while on a 4×4 safari vehicle. He will also be in touch with other drivers via radio, and if anything exciting like a hunt, is going down, he will rush you to it.
Today’s Nairobi to Masai Mara morning will unfold quickly as you encounter wonder after wonder on and Mara’s near attractions. You will see zebras, hyenas, impalas, giraffes, buffalos, and many more animals everywhere.
As you drive by the Mara River, you will see bloats of hippos idling by the water, as well as ferocious crocodiles with their heads sticking out of the water.
The driver will take you to a serene, picturesque spot for lunch around lunchtime. The hotel will have packed a delicious, light lunch of sandwiches, fruits, and soft drinks.
This is a great time to unwind and go over your photos. The Masai Mara is vast, and after lunch, you will head in a different direction in search of new adventures.
At the end of the long day, you will head back to your hotel, where a warm bath and a delicious dinner await you.
After dinner, kick back by the bonfire with your favorite drink as you enjoy stories from the local Masai guides.
Day 3: Optional Hot Air Balloon Safari followed by Full-Day Game Viewing with Packed Lunch
Now! There are two types of sunrises. The oh-it’s-morning kind of sunrise and the Masai Mara kind of sunrise. On day 3, you experience the magical Mara sunrise atop a hot air balloon at an additional USD 450.
The balloons explore parts of the Mara that are inaccessible by either car or foot. It flies you above the animals but low enough for you to look closer. The landscape will blow your mind from up there, especially that of the hippo and crocodile-filled Mara River.
The safaris are an hour long and are mostly climaxed with a beautifully set bush breakfast. With champagne and all the trims. After breakfast, you will commence your morning game viewing.
Morning game drives are usually the most rewarding, for you’re most likely to spot a pride of lions hunting in the morning than in the afternoons. The animals are most active at this time, with hundreds grazing or feeding on the open savannah grasslands.
Depending on your highly knowledgeable guides, you explore the different typographies to lead you to the high-traffic areas.
You stop to enjoy your packed lunch in the wild and proceed with the 3rd-afternoon game viewing of your Masai Mara safari four days package. Though not as busy as the morning ones, afternoon game drives are an absolute delight.
The sun is usually hell-hot by this time, and all roads leading to the Mara River for some water and cooling off. Impalas, gazelles, zebras, giraffes, and rhinos are now easier to spot.
Tourists who book for the four days Masai Mara flying packages in the months between July and October should expect to be treated to the Great Migration .
The migration sees millions of wildebeests, zebras, topis, and impalas move to and from the park through the crocodile-infested Mara River.
Day 4: Morning Game Viewing, Maasai Village, Flight to Nairobi, & Transfer to JKIA
On your third day at the Masai Mara National Reserve , you will start with breakfast, check-out, and a game viewing. Early mornings are great for hunts, as the predators prepare to start the day on a full stomach.
The grazers will also be out in full force; everywhere you look, you will see wild animals. This game viewing will continue until around 11 am, the ideal time to head to a Maasai village. The Maasai tribe lives in the Masai Mara periphery and considers themselves custodians of the great park.
Formerly pastoralists, they have now settled down but still rear cattle and goats. Most young Maasais work at the Masai Mara as guides. During this tour, you will learn a lot about their traditions and culture, including food, clothing, and ceremonies.
You have probably seen the famous Maasai jump, which is a great chance to learn how to do it. The women adorn themselves with colorful clothing and jewelry they make by hand.
You can learn how to make necklaces and bracelets and even take them home. After this visit, the tour guide will transfer you to the nearest airstrip for the flight to Nairobi.
Unfortunately, your 3-day safari in Kenya has come to an end, and after this, your driver will take you back to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi.
On arrival at Wilson Airport, a driver will be waiting to take you back to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight back to your country.
He will drop you at your designated hotel in Nairobi if you visit other places in Kenya.

Fly to Masai Mara National Reserve – Complete Guide & Review
Kenya is the most celebrated safari country in the world, and most of this honor comes from offering the best Masai Mara safari packages. Kenya is among the winners of the Africa Leading Travel Destination Award by World Travel Awards , the last being 2020.
Masai Mara has also won the Africa Leading National Park award six times in a row. Most significantly, it is home to the great wildebeest migration, a spectacular safari adventure named one of the world’s eight wonders in 2018.
The great migration is the mass movement of over 2m wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes that make an annual round trip between Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara.
With or without the migration, the Masai Mara is one of Africa’s most sought-after national parks, with millions of game animals roaming within its boundaries. These include the big five- lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino.
In a typical Kenya safari tour, you will also encounter hyenas, cheetahs, antelopes, baboons, crocodiles, impala, and numerous other animal species. Birdlife is abundant, with over 500 local and migratory birds gracing the Mara skies.
The Masai Mara is located in southwest Kenya in Narok County. It covers an area of 1510 square Km and is about 280 km from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.
There are two main ways of getting to the Masai Mara. The first is by road, which takes about six hours using a safari Landcruiser or tour van, or by air, which takes about 45 minutes.
Flying is the most convenient when you are short of time, as spending more time at the park and less on the road makes sense. If you spend more than three nights at the park, then you can opt for a road safari as it has advantages.
Masai Mara Safari Flight Package – FAQ and Travel Guide
If you still have some questions regarding a Kenya safari or how to fly to Masai Mara, here are answers to common questions.
1. How long should I stay at the Masai Mara?
The Masai Mara is vast, and we recommend a minimum of three nights and four days to feel that you have genuinely enjoyed being there. If you’ve only three days in Kenya , we recommend booking a Masai Mara flying package so that you can spend as much time as possible doing game drives.
The flight to Masai Mara from Nairobi takes only 45 minutes only. Alternatively, the road transfer from Nairobi to Masai Mara is ideal if you’ve more than four days.
It takes approximately 6 hours, allowing you to see more of the Kenyan countryside at a relaxed pace. Of course, if your time and budget allow, you can stay up to five nights for a fantastic experience.
With more than ten nights , we would plan to have you add more destinations, like Diani beach, to the package. If you’re pressed for time, two nights would probably do, but in this case, we encourage you to plan to arrive in Nairobi as early as possible.
Not later than 6:00 am Nairobi time. We would then transfer you to Wilson Airport, where you would book your flight to Masai Mara and arrive early enough for the morning game drive.
Going by road means spending too much time traveling, interrupting your adventure time. Also, remember that although Masai Mara fly-in safaris save time, they are more expensive than road transfers.
2. Should I fly to the Masai Mara or go by road?
This will depend on several factors, as each means has advantages and disadvantages. Flying to Masai Mara is faster as it takes only 45 minutes.
It is also more expensive and does not allow you to see or interact with the quintessential Kenyan landscape or people. On the other hand, going by road will be cheaper, but it also takes much longer.
Even then, it allows you to enjoy the Kenyan countryside, its beauty, and its people as you will make several stops on your way.
We always advise that if you’ve ample time, then go by road, but if you’re pressed for time, we recommend a flying safari to Masai Mara.
3. When is the best time to visit the Masai Mara?
The beauty of the Masai Mara is that no matter what time of the year you visit, you will still find lots to see and do. But to answer the question directly, the best time to book a Masai Mara flying package is between July and October.
During this time of the year, you will witness the 8th wonder of the world. However, Masai Mara is an all-year-round park with numerous game-viewing activities.
The dry months of January to March are highly recommended. April-June is traditionally the ‘low season due to prolonged rains experienced in Kenya. Most camps and lodges close at this time as tourists are fewer.
If you’re traveling on a budget and don’t mind a little rain, this is a great time to have the vast park to yourself, not to mention the highly discounted rates!
You may also want to consider spending Christmas or New Year in the bush; we promise you that it doesn’t get more special than that.
4. Which other destinations can I consider when I fly to Masai Mara?
Kenya is blessed with wildlife , dense national parks, mountains, lakes, world-class beaches, rich culture and traditions, friendly people, and fantastic nightlife. This means there is no shortage of things you can combine with your Masai Mara safari.
The unbeatable combination is bush and beach. After spending several days at the Masai Mara, we recommend you unwind on the white sandy beaches of Diani, Africa’s leading beach destination.
You can also combine your Masai Mara safari with other parks, such as Lake Nakuru , home to millions of flamingos. Ol Pajeta Conservancy in Nanyuki is another exciting place where you can view endangered rhinos at close quarters.
Of course, leave some time to explore Nairobi or Mombasa’s nightlife, visit curios markets, and taste the local cuisine.
5. Where should I stay at the Masai Mara?
The Masai Mara is home to some of the most luxurious tented camps in the world. Think exclusivity, pampering, private pools, and Jacuzzis. You will find it here if you are looking for a well-deserved break with all the trims.
At the same time, the Mara also features mid-luxury lodges, budget camps, and everything in between. This means that where you stay during your 4-day Masai Mara safari can only be limited by your budget and preferences.
If you’ve always wanted to sleep under the stars with animal noises in the distance, this is your chance! Another essential point to note regarding accommodation at the Masai Mara is that you can stay inside or outside the reserve or in a conservancy.
Some people have booked holidays only to learn they will not be staying in the main park on arrival. This is not necessarily a disadvantage as some smaller conservancies are wildlife dense.
Your travel agent should be able to advise you on where you will be staying to meet your budget and need when you fly to Masai Mara.
